Works from the Amgueddfa Cymru/Museum Wales' Sutherland collection have featured in a series of curated exhibitions at Oriel y Parc.

Sutherland at Oriel y Parc

Many of Sutherland’s best-known works are inspired by the wild coastline of Pembrokeshire. After his death in 1980, it was revealed that he wanted to leave a collection to Wales because he felt ‘having gained so much from this country, I should like to give something back’.

Previous exhibitions featuring the work of Graham Sutherland include:

Stories from the Sea: Above, Below and Beyond the Tide
The exhibition features a wide variety of artworks, with pieces from Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones to Welsh artists Ceri Richards and Richard Wilson, examples by 20th century figures such as David Jones to more contemporary work by Jem Southam, Jennie Savage and Marcus Coates. There’s also work by Gavin Turk, a seascape by Tenby-born artist Augustus John and examples of maritime treen and scrimshaw on loan from a private collection. A selection of pieces by 20th century British artist Graham Sutherland are also on display.

Spirit of Place: Sutherland and the Romantic Landscape
The exhibition shows how Sutherland’s landscape art developed before and during World War II and features other Neo-Romantic landscapes from the collection of Amgueddfa Cymru, including artists such as Paul Nash, John Piper and Ceri Richards.

Sidney Nolan and Graham Sutherland: A sense of place
Explore myth, legend and landscape through the work of Sidney Nolan (1917–1992), one of the important Australian artists of the 20th century. This is a joint exhibition with artist Graham Sutherland (1903–1980) exploring each artists’ sense of place.
